"Lime Kiln Lighthouse" Canvas Giclee Print San Juan Island Washington by Carol Thompson

by carolthompson

"Situated on a low rocky bluff on San Juan Island in Puget Sound between Washington State and Canada, Lime Kiln Lighthouse was so named because of the lime quarry and kilns in the area. Completed in 1919, the lighthouse presides over 'Whale Watch Park' (officially Lime Kiln Point State Park) where the building is used as a whale research station."

Artist comment: "I do my own research on every lighthouse I paint, and I have done most of the Washington's major lights. In this oil on canvas, I chose the setting from the path slightly above, looking toward the water. I sketched the composition, then began the painting with the background sky and water, leaving the lighthouse until later. Next I painted the trees, shrubs, and rocks, the foreground and path, with the exception of the small tree in front of the building (and the leafless sapling). The trees were the finishing touch."
