Cigar box with fabric collage lid, Devils Post Piles in Mammoth Lakes, CA., clean box, 8 x 4.5 x 4.5, signed,

by loeyart

Cigar boxes are used for shipping and then storing cigars in a humidified room or box. Stores have large rooms for displaying. Open boxes are for the customer that only wants a few cigars. When the box is empty, I buy them for my projects. Originally I was given about 50 boxes. The intent was that to decorate, I would paint 'manly' things like fish and motorcycles - but that isn't my style. I like to paint abstract nature or non objective (no recognizable subject). I decided to try fabric landscapes, using my 60 year old collection of fabrics and ribbons. My web site has fabric wall hangings. ( Soon I will put more on (

The Post Piles are a National Monument. You have to walk to see them, but their height and uniformity are amazing. On a short walk you can reach the top, where there is a pattern of hexagons that extend over the basalt columns. All alike and the same size and shape, as if manufactured. There are other wonderful sights like waterfalls in the near-by area.

My techniques are included, there are 35 pieces, but only 9 different fabrics. 3 coats of Scotch Guard were used to protect the fabric, which may be dry cleaned, not washed.
