Herbal Insect Deterrent Body Spray, Yarrow

by meadowmuffin2010

Herbal alcohol and essential oils combine to send bugs in the other direction.

Gardeners who utilize companion planting are probably aware that Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) is used for warding off detrimental insects. Named for Achilles, the Greek warrior who used the plant for his wounded soldiers, it is one of the oldest medicinal plants known to man and holds its place in folk medicine as a cure all.

Infused in 100 proof alcohol for several weeks results in a tincture very useful as a bug repellent and soothing for existing skin inflammation from insect bites and poison ivy, oak and sumac. Diluted with witch hazel further enhances the astringent cooling relief.

This spray relies on three effective essential oils.
Catnip has many other uses besides entertaining our feline companions. Studies have found that nepetalactone, a compound found in catnip was more effective than DEET at repelling mosquitoes. DEET can cause rashes and eye irritation so if there is an alternative why not try it?
Catnip essential oil is pricey but it works.

No matter what the ailment, it seems to be relieved with lavender. That's because it works.
Lavender deters bugs in addition to disenfecting and relieving the itch of existing bites and stings.

Citronella is a strong, potent oil in which most of us are familiar with its presence in patio type candles.

So if you would prefer a spray rather than a topically applied herbal oil, than try this Yarrow Body Spray. Spray onto exposed skin prior to outdoor activities. Avoid getting into your eyes. Use your own discretion as to how often it must be reapplied.

****Pregnant women need to check with their physician before using essential oils and the herb Yarrow.
Due to the potency of the essential oils, best to avoid use on children under the age of five years old.*******

*****Can be used as a bug deterrent for dog bedding but too strong in potency to use right on the animal's fur unless further diluted. If desired for this purpose let me know and I'll dilute it with distilled water and put into an 8 oz. plastic spray bottle.
Not for use on cats.*****

Yarrow Insect Deterrent Body Spray comes in a 2 oz. or a 4 oz. plastic spray bottle.
