by Peligraphics

vintage lacquerware from Fuzhou, China. there are 3 famous Chinese cities for lacquerware. Beijing, Fuzhou and Yangzhou, and each uses a different lacquer technique. Fuzhou is well-known for bodiless lacquerware, one of the 3 treasures of ancient Chinese arts and crafts. bodiless lacquerware starts with clay, plaster or wood, then grass, linen, or silk is pasted onto an object, layer after layer of lacquer is applied as the binding agent and after the outer cloth shell is hardened, the original material is removed. more lacquer is added to create the bowls other side. an amazingly strong form is created, each coat polished to a mirror finish. this bowls is 4 1/4" around, with an iridescent deep red color on the outside and bright orange on the inside. the depth of inside is 2 5/8" sits on 3 legs 5/8" long. the bowl is waterproof and 1/8" thick, which means many dozens of layers of lacquer, each polished to a gleaming mirror finish. the bowl is very lightweight but extremely strong. a classic shape and a true oriental wonder and keepsake. also makes a great gift box for a very special item, making your gift extremely special.
