Four delicate, hand colored butterflies are presented on a lovely engraving gleaned from Sir William Jardine's 1833 Victorian entomology reference.

Two butterflies, each in 2-views, are studies in butter yellow and copper and in orange and brown on a beautiful hand-colored engraving from Sir William Jardine. All four butterflies have been finely etched and published by William H. Lizars of Edinburgh -

Duke of Burgundy Fritillary

'The Naturalist's Library' was a charming series of 40 natural history volumes with hand-colored engravings and notes that was published by Sir William Jardine (English, 1800-74) between the years 1833-43.

The heavy paper is blank on its reverse, top-tipped in gold and measures 4.125" x 6.375" (11x17 cm). The tissue guard remains attached and the paper shows gentle tanning to betray its 175+ years. The edges are smooth and clear and there are no tears, folds, creases, or marks.

You are purchasing an original 1833 engraving and it does not have watermarks. I will send this to you flat, protected, and by USPS 1st Class mail.
