Pair of vintage English Beswick Staffordshire ceramic dogs, gold and white, Wally mantle dog, 8" tall, 1378-5, English Country, gift idea
Beautiful pair of Stafforshire Spaniel mantle dogs by Beswick, featuring gold collars with medallions, around their necks.
I was able to purchase these along with another pair in my shop at an antique fair in San Francisco.
They measure approximately 6" x 8" tall.
These have been hand painted so will vary in the details.
They are in great condition with no chips or cracks.
The bottoms are impressed with "Beswick, England, 1378-5".
They are probably from the 50's or 60's.
Beswick Pottery began in 1892 and was sold to Royal Doulton in 1969. By the end of 2002, Royal Doulton ceased production of all Beswick products.
An intriguing legend surrounds Staffordshire’s dog figurines. The Victorian tale goes that spaniel figurines placed on the windowsill sent out a secret message. A woman would place the ornaments in her front window; if they were back to back, it meant her husband was at home. If the dogs faced each other, it meant her husband was out at sea, welcoming her lover in to the house.
Great pieces of English Country and Victorian decor that is so popular now!
