Curly Maple Platter

Beautiful curly Maple dish with an elegant ogee curve lifting it up. Buffed to a satin shine this piece looks polished while still letting the figured grain be seen from all angles.
The slight spalting throughout and sapwood arches around the rim give this piece a lot of visual interest making it truly one of a kind!
Maple is used in everything from flooring to baseball bats to instruments! Maple’s color can vary from clear whites and creams to light tans and honey. Beyond its use for lumber, the Maple tree’s sap is boiled down to produce maple syrup and is the main tree responsible for the brilliant colors in the fall. The grain is straight and even with little distinction between rings.
While most Maple grain is straight, some trees grow with a peculiar twisted pattern. This is known as curly wood; it creates a three-dimensional effect, almost as if the wood has “curled” across the board. It is also known as fiddleback maple since it is used to create violins and fiddles. Even when the surface is perfectly smooth, light reflects and interacts with the grain of the wood, creating a gem-like chatoyance. It is unknown what causes trees to grow this way.
Finished with food safe oils and waxes.
