Live edge Maple vessel
A beautiful live edge vessel with the bark still attached. The gentle curves and subtly flared rim perfectly show off the different colors and grain of the bark, sapwood, and heartwood!
The stabilized bark still has some lichen on it that has been stabilized to last just as long as the rest of it. Accenting the amber browns and reds with its wonderful green hue!
This particular piece has very thick bark and was turned on a slight bias so that from one angle the bark travels down the edge to show more of its texture and colors.
Maple is used in everything from flooring to baseball bats to instruments! Maple’s color can vary from clear whites and creams to light tans and honey. Beyond its use for lumber, the Maple tree’s sap is boiled down to produce maple syrup and is the main tree responsible for the brilliant colors in the fall. The grain is straight and even with little distinction between rings.
A live edge is when the shape from the bark or outer layer of sapwood is left on the piece. This is often done on flat slabs of wood for tables. The bark is usually removed when creating a live edge; as the wood and bark dry, they move in different directions and at different rates and will eventually separate completely. However, through controlled drying conditions, sealants, and glue, it’s possible to stabilize the bark and keep it on the finished piece.
Finished with food safe oils and waxes.
